Geotechnical advice, reviews and conceptual designs for above ground and mined pit tailings storage facilities for the following projects in Australia. Mineral sands typically split the sand and slimes (slit and clay) fraction during the processing, with the fines fraction potentially having a very low settled insitu dry density and high insitu moisture content, which can inhibit closure.

Cyclone Mineral Sands Project – Rawlinna, WA
Tailings from the processing comprise two streams that were to be mixed in the tailings hopper before being pumped to the discharge point. The sand stream, with a maximum particle size of 1 mm, comprises the majority of tailings. Initial deposition was a standalone stack with the discharge point extending longitudinally along the crest of the stack. After development of mine voids, the tailings stream was diverted into the sterile mine voids.

Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project – Dampier Peninsula, WA
Third party review of the proposed surface tailings storage facility and in-pit tailings deposition. Initial deposition was a standalone stack with the discharge point extending longitudinally along the crest of the stack. After development of mine voids, the tailings stream was diverted into the sterile mine voids.

Avonbank Mineral Sands Project – Horsham, Victoria
Review of the proposed in-pit tailings storage system. This review resulted in additional testwork which not only confirmed that the proposed flocculated tailings facility was stable and could be rehabilitated relatively quickly with the site being returned to agricultural use, but also resulted in the pit walls for mining being steepened to recover more ore. This project is yet to be completed.

Goshen Mineral Sands Project, Victoria
Review of the proposed in-pit tailings storage system. This review resulted in tailings testwork to assess the tailings properties. This project is yet to be completed
